Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Warning Bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 is in force.

This means that winds with mean speeds of 41 to 62 kilometres per hour are expected.

At 10 a.m., Tropical Depression Wutip was estimated to be about 300 kilometres north-northwest of Hong Kong (near 24.6 degrees north 112.7 degrees east) and is forecast to move northeast at about 38 kilometres per hour crossing inland Guangdong.

Wutip continues to weaken and move into inland Guangdong this morning, but its outer rainbands are bringing squally showers to the coast of Guangdong. Locally, strong winds are prevailing over many places, occasionally reaching gale force on high ground. The Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 will remain in force early afternoon today. Local winds are expected to moderate progressively later this afternoon. Depending on the change in local wind condition and the extent of weakening of Wutip, the Observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal, No. 1, or replacing the tropical cyclone warning signal by the Strong Monsoon Signal.

Although Wutip would have dissipated on Monday and Tuesday, an active southwesterly airstream will bring heavy showers to the coast of Guangdong. Members of the public should stay on the alert.

Seas are rough with swells. Members of the public are advised to stay away from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Ngong Ping, Green Island and Cheung Chau were 82, 61 and 55 kilometres per hour with maximum gusts exceeding 103, 76 and 67 kilometres per hour respectively.

(Precautionary Announcements with No. 3 Signal)

1. Please complete precautions as soon as possible. Make sure objects likely to be blown away are securely fastened or taken indoors. Check if all windows and doors can be securely locked.

2. Drains should be cleared of leaves and rubbish. People in low-lying areas should take precautions against flooding.

3. Avoid staying in areas exposed to high winds. Drivers using highways and flyovers should be alert to violent gusts.

4. Construction and property management practitioners should make sure that overhanging facilities and temporary structures outdoors are securely fastened or placed on the ground, and complete precautionary measures as soon as possible.

5. Small vessel owners should now complete all safety arrangements and return to nearby typhoon shelters.

6. Small vessels not yet in typhoon shelters should seek shelter without delay. Use heavy anchors and check that all deck fittings are firmly fastened.

General Situation:

Tropical Cyclone Wutip will move across inland Guangdong and weaken gradually today. Under the influence of its associated rainbands, there will be heavy squally showers and thunderstorms over the coast of southern China. It will be windy with rough seas and swells. Wutip will further weaken later today. However, under the influence of an active southwesterly airstream, there will still be occasional heavy showers and squally thunderstorms over Guangdong early this week. An anticyclone aloft is expected to strengthen gradually in the middle and latter parts of this week. The weather over Guangdong will improve and it will be hot.
