Very Hot Weather Warning
The Very Hot Weather Warning is now in force.

Under the influence of prolonged heat, members of the public should stay on the alert to prevent heat stroke or other discomforts related to very hot weather and pay due attention to health conditions. If symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, shortness of breath or confusion develop, take rest and seek help immediately, and seek medical advice as soon as possible.
Elderly persons, pregnant women, infants and children, those with chronic illnesses, such as heart disease or high blood pressure, as well as the obese are more vulnerable to heat stroke. Watch out for any symptoms of heat stroke.
When engaged in work under hot weather or high-temperature environments, please refer to the Guidance Notes on Prevention of Heat Stroke at Work of the Labour Department and take necessary precautions.
When engaged in outdoor activities, drink more water and avoid over exertion. If not feeling well, take a rest in the shade or cooler place as soon as possible. Perform outdoor activities in the morning or late afternoon.
During indoor activities, replenish water timely. If there is no air-conditioning, then windows should be kept open and fans be used as far as possible to maintain adequate indoor ventilation. Public facilities with heat sheltering may also be used.
Avoid prolonged exposure under sunlight. Light-coloured and air-permeable clothing, a wide-brimmed hat that covers the back of your neck and ultraviolet (UV) blocking sunglasses can reduce the chance of sunburn by solar UV radiation.
Choose a broad-spectrum water-resistant sunscreen product with a sun protective factor (SPF) of 30 or higher when doing outdoor activities and apply liberally; reapply every two hours if you need to stay outdoors for a prolonged period, or after swimming, sweating or towelling off.
Beware of health and wellbeing of elderly or persons with chronic medical conditions. If you know of them, call or visit them occasionally and check whether their household ventilation and air-conditioning devices function properly.
Those more vulnerable to heat stroke should avoid outdoor activities and stay away from hot environment as far as possible. Stay in cool, well-ventilated or air-conditioned places.

An area of low pressure within the broad trough of low pressure over the northern part of the South China Sea will develop gradually and edge closer to the coast of Guangdong. Since the convective clouds associated with it are mainly located at its southern side currently, it is expected to take some time to consolidate. Whether it will develop into a tropical depression can only become more certain when it is relatively close to the coast of Guangdong. If the area of low pressure develops into a tropical depression, the Observatory will assess the need for issuing the Standby Signal, No. 1 this evening (13 July) to tomorrow morning (14 July). According to the present forecast, the low pressure system will be closest to Hong Kong tomorrow morning, skirting within 100 kilometres of the territory. Heavy showers, thunderstorms and squalls will affect Hong Kong tomorrow. There may be a need to issue rainstorm warning signals or Localised Heavy Rain Advisory. Strong winds will prevail offshore. Flooding may occur in some low-lying areas. Showers will be heavy at times at first on Wednesday (15 July) and there will still be strong winds offshore. The Observatory will closely monitor the development and movement of the low pressure system. Members of the public should take note of the latest weather information from the Observatory.

Here is the latest weather bulletin issued by the Hong Kong Observatory.

The weather is mainly fine over Guangdong. Meanwhile, an area of low pressure within the broad trough of low pressure over the northern part of the South China Sea is bringing unsettled weather to the region.

At noon, Tropical Storm Bavi was centred about 80 kilometres east-southeast of Xuzhou. It is forecast to move north-northeast or northeast at about 14 kilometres per hour across the vicinity of eastern China to the Yellow Sea. Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Haishen was centred about 170 kilometres north-northeast of Yap. It is forecast to move northwest at about 25 kilometres per hour across the western North Pacific.

Weather forecast for this afternoon and tonight

Mainly cloudy with a few showers. Very hot with sunny periods in the afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms later. Light to moderate southerly winds.

Outlook : Heavy showers, thunderstorms and squalls tomorrow and at first on Wednesday. The weather will remain unsettled with showers and thunderstorms in the following couple of days.

General Situation:

An area of low pressure over the broad trough of low pressure over the northern part of the South China Sea will develop gradually, and will edge closer to the coast of Guangdong tomorrow. There will be heavy showers, thunderstorms and squalls over the region in the next couple of days. An active southwesterly airstream is expected to affect the coast of Guangdong in the latter part of this week to early next week. There will be sunny intervals, showers and thunderstorms over the region. Besides, Tropical Cyclone Bavi will move across the vicinity of eastern China to the Yellow Sea today and tomorrow. It will then transform into an extratropical cyclone gradually. Tropical Cyclone Haishen will move across the western North Pacific in the next couple of days.
